Welcome!

Tesfa D. Habtewold, Ph.D., is a visiting postdoctoral research fellow working with Dr. Fasil Tekola-Ayele (Ph.D., Genetic Epidemiologist) at Epidemiology Branch, Division of Population Health Research, National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Institutes of Health, United States of America. His research investigates the interplay between cardiometabolic genetic risk, epigenetics, ancestry, and environmental factors on fetal and neonatal growth, and examines how the trajectory of maternal glycemic levels during pregnancy is linked with placental epigenetic aging and fetal/neonatal growth under the framework of NICHD Fetal Growth Study.

He completed a Ph.D. in clinical and genetic epidemiology at the Department of Epidemiology, University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen, The Netherlands under the supervision of Prof. Behrooz Z. Alizadeh (Ph.D., Genetic Epidemiologist) and Prof. Richard Bruggeman (Ph.D., Neuropsychiatrist). His Ph.D. thesis mainly focused on deep clinical phenotyping of schizophrenia spectrum disorders using data-driven methods using Genetic Risk and Outcome of Psychosis (GROUP) cohort data. He also completed a master’s degree in clinical and psychosocial epidemiology and a master’s degree in adult health nursing at the Department of Epidemiology, University of Groningen, The Netherlands, and the Department of Nursing, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, respectively.

Much of his work is aimed at investigating the epidemiology and risk factors of psychiatric and cardiometabolic disorders. He has also published on several other research topics, including maternal and child nutrition, TB and HIV, healthcare satisfaction, and trauma. Dr. Habtewold has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles, chapters, reports and commentaries in international peer-reviewed scientific journals. Moreover, he has six years of undergraduate and graduate teaching experience at various universities and colleges.
